Assurance of Learning in the Age of AI: Strengthening Quality, Equity and Trust Through Connected Assurance

08 September, 2026

POSITIONING PAPER

As artificial intelligence reshapes assessment and academic judgement, universities and regulators face a defining challenge. How can institutions credibly evidence learning across diverse delivery contexts and student cohorts while protecting flexibility and access?

Assurance of Learning in the Age of AI sets out OES’ perspective on why assurance must now be approached as a connected, program-level design endeavour. Drawing on more than a decade of partnership with Australian and international universities, the paper introduces the Connected Assurance Framework, which integrates relational, technical and pedagogical dimensions to strengthen confidence in outcomes.

What we will explore in this paper

  • The Connected Assurance Framework and its three interdependent dimensions
  • Why connection matters more than study modality in managing AI-related risk
  • Equity implications for regional, remote and flexible learners
  • Alignment with the Higher Education Standards Framework and TEQSA’s assessment reform guidance
  • What connected assurance means for universities, partners and the wider sector
