Case Study

Transforming Executive Education on behalf of Oxford University’s Saïd Business School

When the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School (Oxford Saïd) sought to reimagine its MBA and Executive MBA (EMBA) programs for a digital era, it needed a partner that could match its global reputation for excellence. OES was selected to lead this ambitious transformation with a full digitization of Oxford Saïd’s flagship programs under urgent timelines and with high expectations. Over a tightly orchestrated project between September 2020 and March 2021, OES worked hand-in-hand with the School to deliver dynamic, high-quality online learning experiences that preserved the spirit of Oxford’s world-renowned education while embracing modern pedagogical approaches.

THE CHALLENGE

Digitizing World-Class Programs at Pace

With a centuries-old legacy of academic excellence, Oxford University is globally renowned not just for its scholarship but for its distinctive, discussion-driven model of teaching, often referred to as the “Oxford Experience.”

At Oxford Saïd, this means rich classroom dialogue, close faculty-student interaction, and a deep sense of intellectual community. So when the need arose to deliver its prestigious MBA and EMBA programs digitally, the stakes were high.

Oxford Saïd faced an urgent and complex challenge: to offer its MBA and EMBA programs digitally without compromising academic integrity, student experience, or brand reputation.

Some challenges included:

  • Aggressive timelines linked to cohort launches in September 2020.
  • Blended delivery demands, balancing asynchronous and synchronous experiences across global time zones.
  • Maintaining the “Oxford Experience” in a virtual setting.
  • Building internal capability for long-term digital education resilience.

It was a challenge that called not just for technical expertise, but for deep educational insight, innovation, and precision—and that’s where OES came in. With a shared commitment to academic excellence, we were determined to ensure that Oxford’s high-touch learning environment translated into a digital format that felt no less personal, rigorous, or world-class.

OUR APPROACH

Strategic Partnership, Seamless Delivery

At OES , we approached this challenge with a clear methodology: collaborate deeply, design intelligently, and deliver without compromise.

Phase-Based Rollout

ToRather than attempting a monolithic launch, we worked with Oxford Saïd to phase the project strategically:

  • September to November 2020: Core course delivery, including MBA Program Launch, Accounting, Technology & Operations, and Organisational Behaviour.
  • November to January 2021: Advanced courses such as Strategy & Innovation, Governance & Ethics, and Business in Emerging Markets transitioned into digital formats.
  • February to March 2021: Finalization and deployment of specialized courses such as Capitalism in Debate, Strategies for Impact, and Entrepreneurial Projects.

This phased development allowed us to align course readiness with critical academic calendar points, ensuring seamless student experiences.

Bespoke Learning Design

All course builds followed a structured approach rooted in OES’s learning design best practices:

  • Stage 1: Homepages and course overviews were designed and launched early to provide initial engagement points for students.
  • Stage 2: Full asynchronous content, including interactive modules, auto-graded assessments, and multimedia assets, was deployed following quality assurance reviews.

Content was developed within Oxford Saïd’s newly adopted Canvas platform, ensuring a consistent, high-quality experience across courses.

Agile Project Management

Construct’s dedicated project team operated with agility and transparency:

  • Rapid sprint cycles for content build, internal review, demo delivery, and client sign-off.
  • Mobile responsiveness and accessibility checks were integrated throughout (and aligned to WCAG 2.0 AA standards).
  • Ongoing stakeholder collaboration, with regular workshops and updates for Saïd faculty and leadership teams.

We maintained full visibility for the client while owning delivery accountability at every stage. The OES team understood the institutional weight and reputational risk of taking a business school of Oxford Saïd’s stature online. Our structured approach, responsive communication, and rigorous work ethic earned their confidence and trust.

CHALLENGES OVERCOME

Precision Under Pressure

Delivering a full academic portfolio under such intense pressure surfaced multiple challenges, but it also highlighted our expertise:

  • Compressed Timelines: Some courses were turned around from storyboard to live build in as little as four to six weeks, without compromising quality.
  • Multi-Stakeholder Management: Working with multiple faculty members, administrators, and external reviewers, OES established streamlined feedback and approval pipelines to keep the project moving.
  • Platform Adaptation: In some instances, courses originally designed for in-person delivery had to be conceptually redesigned to maximize the capabilities of Canvas and enhance student engagement.
  • Consistency Across Diverse Content: We ensured that despite the diversity of subjects—from Accounting to Business History to Negotiations—every course felt cohesive and aligned to the Oxford Saïd brand.

These challenges demanded speed but they also required judgment, discipline, and a steady hand. Not an easy balance to strike! But OES delivered with precision under pressure, earning Oxford Saïd’s trust as a partner capable of upholding the highest academic standards when it mattered most.

RESULTS AND IMPACT

A Seamless Digital Oxford Experience

OES’s work with Oxford Saïd delivered transformative outcomes:

  • Over 25 full course builds completed between September 2020 and March 2021, meeting every academic milestone.
  • Enhanced Student Engagement: Blended asynchronous and synchronous models supported flexible, interactive learning while maintaining the rigor expected at Oxford.
  • Faculty Development: Our collaboration supported the School’s transition to digital-first teaching, equipping faculty with new skills and confidence in online pedagogy.
  • Setting the Standard: The success of this project positioned Oxford Saïd as a leader in the University of Oxford’s broader digital transformation efforts.

Importantly, feedback from both students and faculty confirmed that the digitized programs preserved the Oxford Saïd identity—a testament to the careful, learner-centered design approach OES championed.
