{"id":33150,"date":"2026-06-24T11:03:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-24T11:03:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oes.com\/us\/?p=33150"},"modified":"2026-06-26T11:37:00","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T11:37:00","slug":"copy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oes.com\/us\/blog\/copy\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Takeaways From Inside Higher Ed\u2019s CTO Webinar: What Digital Transformation Really Requires Now Copy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I attended Inside Higher Ed&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/events\/editorial-webcast\/cost-transformation-glimpse-higher-eds-digital-future\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent webinar<\/a>, <em>The Cost of Transformation: A Glimpse into Higher Ed&#8217;s Digital Future<\/em>, which drew its findings from a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/reports\/2026\/05\/11\/2026-survey-campus-chief-technologyinformation-officers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survey<\/a>, I expected to hear a lot about technology: AI, cybersecurity, infrastructure, the LMS, data systems. Those topics certainly came up.<\/p>\n<p>But the bigger message I took away was that higher education institutions are being asked to transform faster than their people and processes can reasonably support.<\/p>\n<p>At OES, we work with institutions that are ambitious about online learning and student success. The webinar reinforced many of the same conversations we&#8217;re already having across the sector.<\/p>\n<p>Here are my five key takeaways.<\/p>\n<h2>1. Transformation is becoming a capacity problem<\/h2>\n<p>One of the clearest messages from the survey was that institutions have no shortage of digital priorities, but many lack the capacity to execute them.<\/p>\n<p>In many conversations I have with higher education leaders, I hear a version of the same challenge: institutions know where they need to go, but the teams responsible for getting them there are stretched thin.\u00a0The survey highlighted the scale of the challenge: 73% of CTOs identified insufficient IT staffing as a major barrier to achieving their digital transformation goals.<\/p>\n<p>This is where I think the transformation conversation needs to evolve from what technology an institution buys next to what operating capacity the institution needs to make that technology work.<\/p>\n<p>For OES, this is a familiar space. <a href=\"https:\/\/oes.com\/us\/resources\/scale-online-learning-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sustainable transformation<\/a> requires strategy, learning design, student support, operational know-how, change management, and the ability to scale without losing quality.<\/p>\n<h2>2. AI&#8217;s real challenge is moving from individual productivity to institutional impact<\/h2>\n<p>AI was unsurprisingly a major focus of the webinar. What stood out to me was that while institutions are investing heavily in AI, much of the value being realized today remains at the individual level. AI is helping people work faster, but it has not yet fundamentally changed how many institutions operate.<\/p>\n<p>The findings reflect this gap, with 55% of CTOs identifying individual employee productivity gains as AI&#8217;s most tangible benefit, while only 2% reported institution-wide operational transformation.<\/p>\n<p>That is the difference between using AI as a tool and building AI as a capability. A capability requires governance, data readiness, staff confidence, faculty development, clear use cases, and alignment with student outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>For me, that is where the next phase of AI adoption needs to be focused. Institutions need practical pathways for using AI responsibly and effectively in the work that matters most: supporting learners and strengthening academic integrity. OES <a href=\"https:\/\/oes.com\/us\/ai-in-higher-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">can help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>3. The student experience is still too fragmented<\/h2>\n<p>The survey found that fragmentation and too many platforms are among the most commonly cited barriers to creating an easy-to-navigate student experience.<\/p>\n<p>Institutions continue to invest in student-facing technologies, but students do not experience an institution as a collection of systems. They experience it as a journey. They apply, enroll, access content, ask for help, submit work, receive feedback, and seek advice. When those moments feel disconnected, friction can quickly lead to disengagement.<\/p>\n<p>This is often where the learner-first vision becomes very practical. It is not enough to ask whether a platform works; we must ask how well the entire experience works for the learner. At OES, we often talk about <a href=\"https:\/\/oes.com\/us\/blog\/what-stuck-after-the-online-learning-boom-reflections-of-an-online-learning-historian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">designing with the learner in mind<\/a>. The webinar reinforced why that matters.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Online learning demand is outpacing institutional response<\/h2>\n<p>The webinar also confirmed something many of us are already seeing: demand for online and hybrid learning continues to grow. According to the survey, 50% of CTOs reported a substantial increase in demand for online and hybrid learning, yet only 33% said their institution had significantly expanded its online course offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Students increasingly expect flexible, high-quality learning options. Employers are looking for responsive pathways that help people build skills. Working learners need models that fit around busy lives.<\/p>\n<p>Many institutions are responding, but often incrementally. The opportunity is becoming a core directive.\u00a0 And that is particularly true as interest in lifelong learning, certificates, and microcredentials continues to expand.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Partnerships are becoming a strategic capability<\/h2>\n<p>The final takeaway for me is that institutions are rethinking how work gets done.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with growing complexity and ongoing talent shortages, many institutions are looking beyond traditional hiring models and exploring new forms of collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>With 60% of institutions already using contractors or managed service providers to supplement internal capacity, to me this signals a more mature conversation about partnerships.<\/p>\n<p>For years, partnership in higher education has often been framed too narrowly. But the current environment requires a different lens. <a href=\"https:\/\/oes.com\/us\/blog\/advancing-online-learning-through-aligned-partnerships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The right partnership<\/a> should align strategic values and extend institutional capacity.<\/p>\n<p>In many conversations I have with universities, leaders are looking for partners who can help them move faster and strengthen the student experience. They want expertise that complements their internal teams and helps them navigate increasingly complex challenges.<\/p>\n<p>For OES, this is where partnership is most valuable: when it helps institutions build momentum and helps students succeed.<\/p>\n<h2>The real cost of transformation<\/h2>\n<p>The title of the webinar focused on the cost of transformation. But after reflecting on the discussion, I think the bigger question is not simply what institutions need to spend, but <em>what they need to have in place to make that investment worthwhile.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Institutions also need the capacity, coordination, and confidence to turn digital change into real impact for learners.
