Experiential learning combines immersive, hands-on experiences with digital innovation to create more engaging, effective, and future-ready learning environments.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">We\u2019ve\u00a0all been there:\u00a0the typical learning experience. We sit in a\u00a0room,\u00a0and\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0inundated with visual and audio information from the\u00a0\u201csage-on-stage&#8221;\u00a0and\u00a0their\u00a0slides and documents. If\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0lucky enough to be part of an \u201cinnovative\u201d approach, we might be inundated virtually instead:\u00a0bombarded with videos and digitized text content, discussions, and quizzes.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Once\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0sat, listened, and watched,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0then expected to recall and often\u00a0to regurgitate what\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0learned\u00a0in order to\u00a0pass an exam and get a certificate.\u00a0Then, when\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0all over,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0expected to somehow translate what\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0regurgitated into transformative new ways of thinking and behaving.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be it online or in the classroom, in formal education or in the workplace-learning and development sector, this knowledge transfer (or content dumping) approach to teaching remains the dominant approach globally. But the thing is: it doesn\u2019t work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Problem\u00a0With\u00a0Passive Knowledge Transfer<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When we dump information on\u00a0people,\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0working against how their brains work. <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/0364-0213(88)90023-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cognitive Load Theory<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0has proven,\u00a0again and again,\u00a0that the brain can only take so much at once. At the same time, <a href=\"https:\/\/eric.ed.gov\/?id=ED396998\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Constructivist learning theorists<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have shown repeatedly that, unless we <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.jml.2006.09.004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">actively recall<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and do something with what we learn, we\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0retain\u00a0it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s the solution? For many, it\u2019s micro-learning; splitting the stuff up into smaller chunks before trying to push it into learners\u2019 brains. This solution misses the point and oversimplifies a more complex problem. This is equally important in online learning, where shorter videos and bite-sized modules may improve convenience, but they do not necessarily create deeper learning unless they are connected to <a href=\"https:\/\/oes.com\/us\/blog\/the-complete-guide-to-feedback-in-online-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feedback<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and application.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However much you divide information up, if all you do is see\u00a0and\u00a0hear it, you\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0remember it for much longer than a week, and you certainly\u00a0won\u2019t\u00a0change your behaviors\u00a0as a result of\u00a0it. In a micro-learning scenario, the content dump is\u00a0smaller,\u00a0but\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0still stuck in the same old cycle of cram\u2013exam\u2013forget.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What Is Experiential Learning?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So what\u2019s the better answer? Experiential Learning, or learning by doing. Experiential Learning is basically learning by actively doing something in a context that resembles something close to life-like conditions. It\u2019s essentially what a flight simulator is to pilots: simulated environments and challenges that, through trial and error and feedback, develop the knowledge and skills needed to do it in real life.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the classroom, the\u00a0Experiential\u00a0Learning\u00a0method\u00a0means replacing traditional chalk-and-talk pedagogy with inquiry,\u00a0problem-based and project-based learning, transforming the sit-and-listen lecture into the have-a-go, hands-on workshop.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Outside the classroom, Experiential Learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also known as\u00a0Work-Integrated Learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2014<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tends to\u00a0be about learning\u00a0through service within one\u2019s area of study and\u00a0expertise.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What Experiential Learning Looks Like Online\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In an online environment, Experiential Learning looks like purposeful, applied learning experiences that ask learners to do more than watch, read, click, or recall. It means designing digital environments where learners can investigate a problem, make decisions, collaborate with peers, receive feedback, reflect on what happened, and try again. In other words,\u00a0the online\u00a0experience becomes less like a digital textbook and more like a structured simulation of real-world practice.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This might include:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Scenario-based activities that place learners inside realistic workplace or discipline-specific challenges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Simulations, virtual labs, or immersive media that allow learners to test ideas safely before applying them in the real world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Project-based tasks where learners produce something tangible, such as a campaign plan, prototype, analysis, strategy, or portfolio artifact.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Guided peer collaboration, coaching, and feedback loops that help learners reflect on what they did and how they could improve.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Authentic assessments that measure not only what learners know, but\u00a0also\u00a0how well they can apply that knowledge in context.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This aligns well with <a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Experiential_Learning.html?id=zXruAAAAMAAJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kolb\u2019s experiential learning cycle<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, which moves learners through experience, reflection, conceptualization, and active experimentation. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1096751624000381\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recent work<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">on online simulations and virtual labs also supports the idea that digital environments can create meaningful experiential learning when they include active participation, reflection, and authentic application rather than passive content consumption.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why Experiential Learning Is the Future of Education and Training\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In the coming years, the Experiential approach will, more than any other single innovation in learning design and delivery, play a disruptive part in the future of both formal education and workplace learning and development globally.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why?\u00a0Two reasons:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>It\u00a0works!<\/strong> Close-to-real-life experience and <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3102\/0034654320933544\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">supported reflection<\/a><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0is proven to support learners to not just\u00a0develop\u00a0skills, but also to understand and\u00a0retain\u00a0complex information in the long\u00a0term.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>It\u2019s\u00a0needed!<\/strong> Experiential Learning meets a growing demand from both the global formal education sector and the\u00a0workplace\u00a0L&amp;D sector. This is true for next-generation learning experiences\u00a0that\u00a0support people to both learn and apply their learning at the same time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Digital Experiential Learning, with its ability to deliver rich, site-free learning experiences at scale and on demand, is a little explored but potentially doubly disruptive prospect for both\u00a0formal\u00a0learning\u00a0and workplace training. At\u00a0OES Learning Solutions,\u00a0we have\u00a0worked with key clients from the higher education and workplace L&amp;D sectors to design and deliver pioneering,\u00a0next-generation, digital-first Experiential Learning.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 aria-level=\"2\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Examples of Digital-First Experiential Learning in Practice\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:120}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are some examples of our past work:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For the UK\u2019s\u00a0Cabinet Office, we worked with colleagues at the Government Communications Service, designing and delivering a first-of-its-kind, team-based experiential approach to global campaigns and communications training, to connect and upskill communication professionals globally.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU), we worked with professors of Solar Photovoltaics, designing and delivering an Experiential Learning MOOC that supports learners to both understand and apply their learning at the same time.
