Opportunity sits at the heart of every great education story, and for Jodie Klein, it\u2019s been the defining thread of her career. From international development and global higher education to her current role as VP, Partnerships at OES Learning Solutions, Jodie has focused on one thing: opening doors. In this conversation, she reflects on the experiences that shaped her path, the power of education to transform lives at scale, and how saying yes to opportunities that interest you can add up to a meaningful career. <\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your\u00a0background spans international development, global higher\u00a0ed,\u00a0and\u00a0now\u00a0online learning.\u00a0What’s\u00a0the through-line across it\u00a0all?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Opportunity!\u00a0Education opened doors for me, and\u00a0I’ve\u00a0never stopped thinking about it that way.\u00a0We all have ambitions that are shaped by\u00a0what\u2019s\u00a0within reach. Growing\u00a0up in a rural area,\u00a0the\u00a0only\u00a0careers I knew\u00a0about\u00a0were the ones in my community. College changed\u00a0that. I started meeting international students\u00a0and something\u00a0clicked.\u00a0I became curious about the world beyond\u00a0what\u00a0I’d\u00a0grown up in.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I did a communications internship in Thailand in the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. When I came back,\u00a0I\u00a0made\u00a0the\u00a0somewhat wild\u00a0decision to start studying\u00a0Mandarin\u00a0in\u00a0my senior year. I went on to study it at a graduate level too, and that commitment to entering other people’s worlds, linguistically and culturally,\u00a0shaped everything that followed.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s\u00a0when I first really understood what education can do.\u00a0It’s\u00a0a door. And once you walk through it, there are more doors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You spent years in international development on scholarship and exchange programs. What drew you to that work?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Again, opportunity was always central. I was facilitating experiences that changed the trajectory of young people’s lives. I remember sitting across from students in countries like China and Brazil for scholarship interviews and knowing that what happens in that conversation could open opportunities they can’t even imagine from where they’re sitting. I still see some of those faces on my LinkedIn feed, and their successes make me genuinely proud. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I also want to be honest: I recognize the privilege of being able to follow curiosity the way I did. Not everyone gets that. Which is part of why I care so much about scale. If we can design programs that reach more people, that matters.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What eventually pulled you toward edtech?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The skill set translated directly:\u00a0building partnerships with universities, earning trust with academic leadership,\u00a0translating institutional priorities into real solutions.\u00a0The work\u00a0looks\u00a0different\u00a0but\u00a0it feels very\u00a0purpose driven.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You’ve\u00a0now been at OES for over three years. First as Account Director, now as VP of Partnerships. What does this chapter feel like?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It feels like we have\u00a0real\u00a0momentum!\u00a0When I joined, we were\u00a0operating\u00a0as Construct Education and doing\u00a0great work.\u00a0This past year, coming fully together under the OES global brand with a new CEO, Jon Davey, driving energy across the organization \u2014 it feels like a new chapter.\u00a0I believe our team\u00a0is capable of\u00a0remarkable\u00a0things.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I mean that specifically.\u00a0I’m\u00a0always telling people our media team in Cape Town could make commercials. The production quality is extraordinary.\u00a0I’ve\u00a0recently\u00a0learned\u00a0Cape Town is\u00a0actually a\u00a0hub for that kind of creative work, which makes sense. This is a\u00a0good illustration of the exceptional global talent we bring to every project.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We’re\u00a0well-poised to continue\u00a0building flexible, institution-led partnerships that help\u00a0institutions\u00a0grow and reach\u00a0learners they\u00a0couldn’t\u00a0reach before.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As institutions continue to invest in online learning, what will define success in the next phase of growth?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I think we\u2019re entering a really important phase\u00a0of accountability\u00a0for online learning.\u00a0For a long time, the conversation was about access and scale. How do we reach more learners, how do we grow? That still matters, but\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0no longer enough on its own.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s\u00a0going to differentiate programs now is quality.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That means quality in the learning\u00a0experience\u00a0through thoughtful design and strong\u00a0production,\u00a0making content that\u00a0engages\u00a0learners in a meaningful way. It also means thinking about accessibility from the very beginning, not as something you layer on later. If\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0serious about expanding\u00a0opportunities, then programs need to work for all learners, by design.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s where partnerships can play a really powerful role.\u00a0Done well, they allow institutions to scale without\u00a0compromising on\u00a0any of those elements.\u00a0So,\u00a0I think the future of online learning\u00a0is less about choosing between scale and quality,\u00a0and more about how you deliver both, in a way that\u00a0is accessible and\u00a0engaging.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Looking back, were you strategic about\u00a0your career\u00a0path,\u00a0and how do you feel about where you landed?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Strategic might not be the word for it, but\u00a0I\u00a0wasn’t\u00a0wandering. I was following what genuinely excited me and saying yes to opportunities that felt meaningful, even when I\u00a0couldn’t\u00a0see exactly where they were headed. Learning languages, living abroad, doing development work in places where I was very much an outsider. I\u00a0didn’t\u00a0know how it would all translate.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it did. Every bit of it built something: the ability to understand what people actually need, to navigate ambiguity, to build trust across real differences. I think that’s what I’d want younger people to hear. You don’t always need to know where an opportunity leads to know it’s worth taking. The experiences compound in ways you can’t fully anticipate.
